Words & Music hosted by Ingrid Graudins feat. Anna Fermin, Al Day, Dave Sills &
Anna Fermin is an award-winning singer, songwriter, recording artist, visual artist and voice over actor living and working in Chicago. She led her alt-country band Trigger Gospel to critical acclaim, touring the country and Europe, winning over fans with her powerful voice and melody-driven originals. Releasing five albums independently, Anna has become, "one of Chicago's most treasured voices" (Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune). Currently producing her new solo project, Anna continues to be a strong and influential voice in Chicago’s music scene as a mentor to young and aspiring singer-songwriters. Al Day, once hailed as "Most Promising Songwriter" by Chicago Magazine, his current record, GUEST HOUSE is a collection of songs that has been described as “Americana Noir”. His songs bear the angst of the street, of the city, and of the heart. The CD features Al’s trio with Marc Edelstein and Don Stiernberg. Al has written several concert theater pieces, one of which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize (co-written with Doug Lofstrom). Al is part of a spoken word and music work-in-progress piece called "Cracks in the Foundation" with guitarist/songwriter, Randy Lee and journalist/singer/songwriter, Charles Madigan. He took up the cello to meet a girl, ended up playing guitar instead, and then ditched his career as a lawyer because of music. (No, he didn’t get the girl.) Dave’s most recent album, SEA OF STRANGERS, was recorded in 2009, released in 2010 and was named among the "Best of Local Anesthetic 2010" by WXRT DJ Richard Milne. He has performed at many of the best Chicago venues, and has sung with Peter Himmelman at SPACE, Schuba’s and The Park West. Born in NY City, now living in Chicago, Andrew delivers his unique brand of ‘truth is stranger (and often funnier) than fiction’ tales with catchy melodies and a hearty dose of sarcasm and wit. Having started a career as a stand-up comic, his live shows are energetic and interactive, with a folk-rock-comedy blend. Andrew was a semi-finalist in the selection process for the CBS show, Survivor III, which was to be filmed in Africa. He didn’t make the final cut, but the producers of the show did love his video tape submission which featured his “Survivor Theme Song.” In March, 2003, he released his fourth CD, Live at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA.

Radical Light: Stories Untold
Thursday, February 2, 2012 7:00 PM FREE (Various directors, 1968–99, USA, 16mm and video, Approx. 100 min.)
This shorts program is part of a touring series curated by the Pacific Film Archive to accompany the release of the book Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1945–2000. Stories Untold features creative approaches to storytelling that cleverly integrate form and content. James Broughton’s The Bed is a playful exploration of amorous activities on and around the titular piece of furniture; Scott Stark’s I’ll Walk With God employs images from flight safety pamphlets to illustrate a rapturous climb into the heavens; and the late, great George Kuchar offers an homage to melodrama and meteors in A Reason to Live. This program also includes work by Max Almy, Chip Lord, Curt McDowell, and Anne McGuire.
Selected programs from the Radical Light film series are being presented at Block Cinema (02/02), Conversations at the Edge (CATE) at the Gene Siskel Film Center (2/16), and Chicago Filmmakers (2/24).
Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area: Book, Film, and Video Tour was curated by Kathy Geritz and Steve Seid, Film and Video Curators at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and Steve Anker, Dean of the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts. The tour is made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the William H. Donner Foundation.

JT Nero and Allison Russell
|

at
S.P.A.C.E.

Whether touring as an acoustic duo or backed by the scintillating Chicago rock and soul outfit, the Clouds, JT Nero and Allison Russell, have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in American roots music.
For several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands, Po' Girl and JT and the Clouds, have collaborated ex- tensively, but in 2011’s Mountains/Forests, released under the JT Nero banner, they tapped into the true, be- witching power of their voices together on an entire record. After a much buzzed about performance at the Kate Wolf Memorial Fest in 2011, they decided to get folks more of the same, and quick. Their first proper duo record, Birds of Chicago, Volume 1, is set for release in January 2012.
Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s chilling. Fired by a full band, it’s a full tilt revival.
There’s not much Allison Russell can’t sing. She’s got a bit of the speakeasy chanteuse in her, a bit of old R&B, but with a delicacy and clarity of phrasing that Ma Carter or Loretta Lynn would surely approve of. She plays banjo, ukelele, guitar, and clarinet. She’s also a top shelf whistler. She writes gorgeous, unpredictable songs, and makes other people's - often Nero’s - tunes her own with startling ease.
JT Nero is a strange and distinct new American songwriter - he lists Mark Twain and Sam Cooke among his biggest songwriting influences. He is a poet of the everyday and the absurd, the lonely and the ever hopeful. When backed by the Clouds he's a rock n' roll preacher -- with Russell and on his own, he digs deeper into the nuances of his work. The Chicago Tribune recently tabbed him as an “artist on the verge of breaking big.” If "breaking big" allows him to broaden his collection of single batch American bourbons at his home bar in Chi- cago, he’s all for that happening.

The Last Movie
Friday, February 3, 2012 7:00 PM (Dennis Hopper, 1971, USA, 35mm, 108 min.)
Levels of "reality" collide in this wildly nonlinear film concerning a stuntman (Hopper) who stays behind in Peru when the Sam Fuller-directed Western he's working on falls apart due to the accidental death of its star (Dean Stockwell). Loitering in the jungle, he later discovers the native Peruvians shooting their own movie on the abandoned film sets: the wicker "cameras" may be fake, but the violence they "film" is all too real. This hotly anticipated follow-up to Easy Rider was the toast of the Venice Film Festival but at home provoked popular and critical scorn unequaled until Heaven's Gate, and halted Hopper's career until the mid '80s. "The Last Movie is an act of visionary aggression that desecrates Hollywood's universal church."—J. Hoberman, The Village Voice

Jambon is the brainchild of long time Sonia Dada keyboardist Chris “Hambone” Cameron. The group unites former members of Sonia Dada, Liquid Soul, and Weather Report. “ I’m not real big on labels and comparisons.” says Cameron. “It’s wildly eclectic, and real funky. Drop the Meters, Rufus, and AC/DC in a blender, then stand back and hit the switch!” Jambon's return to Space will also feature their additional four piece horn section. Grammy nominated R&B session keyboardist and composer
Chris”Hambone”Cameron’s career spans more than thirty years. In addition to his work with Sonia Dada, he has toured and recorded with John Mayall, Big Twist, Harvey Mandel and Sugarcane Harris, David Bromberg, and many others. A partial listing of his numerous album credits include work with Mavis Staples, Bob Dylan, Freddy Jones Band, Liquid Soul, Rick Danko, Dennis De Young, and Ramsey Lewis. Songwriting credits include The Commodores, Richie Havens, and the feature films Holes, The Guardian, and A Perfect Murder.

Blood Money
Saturday, February 4, 2012 2:00 PM (Rowland Brown, 1933, USA, 35mm, 65 min.)
In this down and dirty exploration of the Los Angeles underworld, George Bancroft plays Bill Bailey, a crooked bail bondsman who can bribe his way out of any jam. Doe-eyed Frances Dee plays against type as socialite Elaine Talbart, a masochistic kleptomaniac looking for a bad man to treat her wrong. Mayhem ensues when the two get mixed up with a serial bank robber. Blood Money is a deliciously perverse tale of double-crosses and dark desires. This still shockingly subversive film garnered the dubious honor of being first on the list of banned films from the Catholic Church’s Legion of Decency.
