A Call Girl (2010. 91 min. Slovenia)
Having grown up in small-town Slovenia, 23-year-old Alexandra embraces the excitement and anonymity of big city life when she moves to the capital. She styles herself as a call girl, planning to take advantage of everything the city has to offer. But her isolated existence—English studies and mortgage payments by day, call girl by night—is shattered when one of her clients dies of a heart attack on her watch. Alexandra must suddenly confront fear, guilt, and desperation as she finds herself pursued by a band of local pimps, as well as the cops. The old village life she had escaped from might now become her only refuge.

South BranchThis month the South Branch Book Club will be discussing Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa.
"Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter is a comic novel by Mario Vargas Llosa. Vargas Llosa uses counterpoint, paradox, and satire to explore the creative process of writing and its relation to the daily lives of writers. One half of the story is an autobiographical account of an aspiring writer named Marito Varguitas, who falls in love with Julia, the divorced sister-in-law of his Uncle Lucho. Marito's success at writing and romance contrasts with the fortunes of Pedro Camacho, the protagonist of the other half of the story, who is a devoted but declining author of radio soap operas." - The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

North Branch
The North Branch Book Group meets on the last Thursday of the month. In September we will discuss Justice: What's the Right Thing To Do by Michael J. Sandel. (See the a staff review.)
“Michael J. Sandel, political philosopher and public intellectual, is a liberal, but not the annoying sort. His aim is not to boss people around but to bring them around to the pleasures of thinking clearly about large questions of social policy. Reading this lucid book is like taking his famous undergraduate course ‘Justice’ without the tiresome parts, such as term papers and exams.”—George F. Will
All are welcome. Register online, call 847-866-0330 or stop in to pick up a copy of the book

The beginning is more than the half. -Aristotle
We become who we are in no small part because of where we have been, where we come from. In this kickoff session for Project Engage, take Flat Falcon along with you to revisit the sites of some of your most powerful memories. Capture a photographic record of Flat Falcon's exploits that will become a part of our traveling exhibit. Bring those images to our first session where we will explore memories of growing up, share our photographs with Flat Falcon, view other images with this theme, and eat pizza. Who is this Flat Falcon, you ask? Pick up the friendly, feathered Flat Falcon, instructions, and the photography packet in the Loft at least one week in advance. Participants must be Evanston Township High School Students. Register here!
